It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that Worshipful Brother Don Wilkes has laid down his working tools and gone on to the Celestial Lodge above.

Donald Wilkes, 86, of Marietta, Georgia, passed away December 20, 2018. He was born April 11, 1932, in Emanuel County, Georgia, but grew up in Toombs County, Georgia. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Brenda Turner Wilkes; daughter, Julie Wilkes Marsh, and sons, Donald Lee and Joseph Craig Wilkes; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Korean War during 1951-1952 in the 64th Tank Battalion 3rd Infantry Division. After the military, he started his career at Independent Life Insurance Company. In 1963, he moved to Marietta, Georgia, as District Sales Manager and retired after 41 years of service. During that time, he was President of the Cobb County Life Underwriter’s Association, served as Vice President of the Georgia Association, having taught several life insurance sales courses.

He was a member of Smyrna Presbyterian Church since 1979, serving as deacon, elder, and Clerk of Session for over twenty years.

He was a Mason of 53 years at Kennesaw Lodge No. 33 and served as Worshipful Master and Ambassador to the Widow’s Club. He was Past Master for James Sledge Daylight Lodge No. 742 and the Cobb County Masonic Convention.

Burial will be at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia with military honors on December 26, 2018, at 1:30 p.m.

There will be a memorial service at Smyrna Presbyterian Church, 3130 Atlanta Road, Smyrna, Georgia 30080, on Saturday, January 12, 2019. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. The service will be at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception in the fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Smyrna Presbyterian Church in Smyrna, Georgia, or the Yaarab Shriners Hospital for Children.
